Who are the Miao?
Over 100 distinctive Miao ethnic groups inhabit the mountainous south and southwestern China. Each group has its unique clothing, and the women's costume are particularly interesting. Embroidery, batik, and beautiful silver jewelry are all indispensable additions to Miao style.
Clothes for the holidays
During holidays, weddings, and other large ceremonies, Miao women usually wear a short jacket with beautiful, embroidered patterns on the narrow sleeves, shoulders, and collar. In some areas, they have glistening pieces of silver and silver bells sewn onto the front, back, cuffs, and lap of the jacket. This is so-called silver jacket.
Their colorful pleated skirts are characterized by 40 elaborate layers with over 500 pleats. In some areas, women's long skirt reaches directly to their feet.Their short skirt only reaches to the knees.
In front of the skirts is a colorful embroidered apron, which hangs and gets to the knees too. Looking like a bird's beautiful tail feathers, four or five long waistbands fly behind the apron. Leggings and beautifully embroidered shoes are also indispensable to some Miao women.
With extraordinary silver ornaments, like big silver headdress, neckbands, earrings, and silver bracelets to go with these clothes, many Miao women can proudly claim they are the most beautiful women in the world.
There are usually five colors used in Miao clothes: black, white, blue, red, and yellow. From weaving, dying, sewing, to embroidering, Miao women make their clothes by themselves.
Casual suits
Miao casual suits look simple and light, but they are still very beautiful. Shirts, jackets, and pants are all embroidered with beautiful patterns.
On informal occasions, Miao women wear an embroidered handkerchief on their head instead of the heavy silver headdress that’s worn during the holidays.
Embroidery
Girls start to learn how to embroider from their mother when they are only seven or eight years old. When they reach 14 or 15 years old, they have come to be an experienced embroiderer. Then they will spend 3-5 years preparing themselves a suit of embroidered clothes as a dowry before they get married.
The fascinating Miao embroidery art reflects their history, religion, and culture. Butterflies, flowers, dragons, mountains, and water waves are eternal motifs throughout their history.
With no historical scripts for thousands of years, the Miao remember their history on their embroidered costume.Many old stories are reflected on the patterns that have been bequeathed for generations. Actually almost each embroidered pattern has an interesting story.
Batik
Techniques for making batik, a durable cloth with remarkable colors and designs, have been around for more than 1,000 years.
First, a worker will use a knife immersed in hot wax to paint a picture on a sheet of white cloth. Then they will dye the cloth in a huge vat, sometimes with as many as five different colors. After dyeing, the cloth is rinsed and boiled.
