John M. Donnelly

 South Amboy native John M. Donnelly is a proud son of South Amboy.  Born in South Amboy Hospital, he is as life-long resident of our city.  A graduate of Saint Mary’s High School, he has always considered South Amboy a perfect place to call home.  His Irish heritage has always been a source of pride for him and his family.

John Donnelly served in the Marine Corps and is a respected Korean War Veteran

John joined Progressive Fire Company as a “Buffalo” in the 50’s and was inducted as a regular member of the Company in 1954.  He rose through the ranks of the Fire Department and was made Chief of the SAFD in 1978.  He remains active in the department celebrating 54 years of service this year.

John was married to the former Joanne O’Leary who cared for so many of our City children during her long tenure as South Amboy’s School Nurse.  Joanne Donnelly shared her husband’s love of our city and its proud Irish heritage.  They are the parents of three children; the late John M. Donnelly Jr., Maryellen, Thomas and the proud grandfather of Thomas and Megan.

 John Donnelly is retired from Hercules after a long and distinguished career.  He is a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Veterans of Foreign Wars, as well as a founding member of the John M. Donnelly Foundation.  He continues to add to the fabric of our city, bringing the spirit of community, service and dedication to these organizations through his participation.
